At the core of a sonography machine is the transducer, a device that emits and receives ultrasound waves. When the transducer is placed on the skin (or inside a body cavity), it sends sound waves into the body. These waves travel through various tissues and are reflected back to the transducer when they encounter different interfaces, such as between fluid and soft tissue or soft tissue and bone.
